Strain Review: High & Lonesome Appalachia F3

Total Flower Time: 70 Days

Grow Report: One of my favorite things about Appalachia was the variability that I saw while growing them out. I was lucky enough to find 4 females out of 5 plants grown and all of the females had a ton of variability in their size. I decided to pick the tallest and the shortest plant to keep around guessing that they would offer the most variability for me to see what was inside these genetics.

It was easy to see as they filled out that they were going to be short and stout plants with a flower structure that was a bit fluffier than what most of the market wants but the terpene profile was definitely something that caught my attention. The taller plant had much more of a nose to it and it’s resin production was great even 3 weeks into flower. It seems the fluffier they are, the more resin production that I tend to see in them so I am guessing that this trait breeds pretty consistently throughout.

Appalachia was very easy to grow although they did seem to run out of steam at about 55 days so I think I need to time my last topdress a bit better the next time I grow out the mother that I kept. These girls raced into 70 days where I could have kept them going for a few more days but I think overall 70 days is a good number to keep in mind.

Smoke Report: After a nice hang dry at 60 & 60 for two weeks, Appalachia F3 was first smoked after a 2 week jar cure and I must say that out of all of my girls this crop, this is the smoke that my wife and I keep going back to. The buds are sticky and resinous and wreak of mangos and cat piss when you break them up. The nose stayed pretty well through cure and the trichromes also decided to stick around nicely. My favorite thing about Appalachia F3 is the effects…its very energizing and gives some of us extremely powerful moments of creativity in the beginning. I love how it energizes you and doesn’t make people with low tolerances paranoid or anxious at all. It is a daily driver that works best with your morning coffee and as a smoke that starts your evening off with a bang. The other feedback we have seen with Appalachia is that it’s effects last for a few hours and there is no crash after the come down. I would say this is the smoke for people who need to get shit done and don’t want anyone thinking you could be stoned…i.e. it’s great for work and being a parent.

While I look at Appalachia F3 as something that I am unsure the commercial market will like by itself, we are finding ourselves smoking this every single day so I think we need to dive more into this to see how she grows out the second time as well as seeing how some of the crosses that High & Lonesome has made with this particular cut.

Commercial Appeal: This is where I am very torn to be honest. If you were to ask me what I have mostly been smoking on the past month, I would easily say that the Appy has been our go to smoke. The problem is that it straddles what I think the commercial market will go for. While we are going to try and help reset the commercial market and not just follow what the markets wants, we also have to be smart with how we introduce cultivars that differ from the current market trends. I think from an effects perspective people will love Appy so that isn’t the problem. The issue that people might have is how fluffy the flower structure is and I worry about how much I can get these to produce in a commercial environment.

The plants grow super short and squat which can limit your lateral space for more plants and because of its fluffier structure, it doesn’t yield what I really need it to. Where I am going to leave this one is TBD…meaning that I need to grow it out a second time now that it will be adapted better to my grow environment and see how it comes out then. Stay tuned my friends…
